First Year • Semester 2 • NEP Syllabus
Engineering Chemistry (2AS112BS)
**Course Aim:** To impart sound knowledge on the principles of chemistry involving different application-oriented topics required for all engineering students.
2. P.C. Jain and Monica Jain, Engineering Chemistry, Dhanpat Rai & sons New Delhi, Sixteenth Edition.
3. A. K. Das and M. Das, An Introduction to Nanomaterials and Nanoscience, CBS Publishers and Distributors.
Water Treatment & Analysis
Hardness: Caused by dissolved salts of Ca and Mg.
EDTA Method: Uses Eriochrome Black T indicator to estimate total hardness.
Zeolite Process: Uses sodium aluminosilicate to exchange Ca/Mg ions with Na ions.
Nanomaterials & Corrosion
Nanomaterials: Materials with at least one dimension between 1-100 nm (e.g., CNTs, Fullerenes).
Corrosion: Deterioration of metal due to chemical/electrochemical reaction.
Prevention: Galvanization (Zn coating) and Tinning (Sn coating).
Green Chemistry
Definition: Design of products/processes that reduce hazardous substances.
12 Principles: Includes prevention of waste, atom economy, safer solvents, and energy efficiency.
Green Computing: Environmentally sustainable computing.
Energy Science
Calorific Value: Heat produced by combustion of unit mass of fuel (HCV/LCV).
Cracking: Breaking down heavier hydrocarbons into lighter ones (Petrol).
Octane Number: Measures anti-knocking quality of petrol.
Energy Storage & Lubricants
Batteries: Li-ion (Rechargeable), Ni-Cd.
Fuel Cells: Convert chemical energy directly to electricity (H2-O2 cell).
Lubricants: Reduce friction. Key properties: Viscosity Index, Flash Point, Cloud Point.
Biochem & Environment
Pollution: Air (Acid Rain, Ozone Depletion), Water, Soil.
Biotechnology: Use of living systems (DNA/RNA) for technology.
Fermentation: Metabolic process converting sugar to acids/gases/alcohol.
